Classroom Volunteers Needed for AITC

Ag in the Classroom volunteer training to be offered in January

If you’ve ever wished folks understood more about farming and agriculture, here’s your chance to help. DeKalb County Farm Bureau is gearing up for the 2023 Ag in the Classroom (AITC) program, and we need people like you.

With your help, Ag in the Classroom lessons will take place in elementary classrooms across DeKalb County during the coming months. Volunteers will be provided with training, lesson outlines, supplies, and a step-by-step online slideshow to help guide students during the lesson.

What you’ll do:

1st Grade – More Than a Seed
Help students explore the steps of crop production, learn what seeds need to germinate, and plant corn & soybean seeds and learn how those crops impact their own lives.

2nd Grade – From Moo to You
Teach students how dairy farmers care for their cows, how to make an edible dairy treat, and explain why dairy products are important in a healthy diet.

3rd Grade – It’s an Earful
Share with students how farmers grow and harvest corn, guide dissection of corn kernels, investigate types of corn, and explore how corn impacts our lives.

4th Grade – Mapping Illinois Agriculture
Guide students through a series of “mysteries” in order to discover ways agriculture connects to their lives, identify Illinois agricultural products, and use maps to locate ag-related sites.

5th Grade – Exploring STEM Careers in Agriculture
Help students explore the wealth of careers available in the ag industry, learn about several specific agricultural careers, and play STEM Career BINGO.

Please let us know if you can assist with this important effort! AITC volunteer training will take place at DeKalb County Farm Bureau on Thursday, Jan. 19 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Whether you’re brand-new to volunteering or have been conducting AITC lessons for years, we look forward to getting you up to speed on our updated lessons.
