Kernels of Knowledge

New Corn Display Debuts at SMS Science Olympiad

Farm Bureau staff recently made an appearance at the first in-person ag literacy event in over a year when they participated in Sycamore Middle School’s Science Olympiad.

The event featured several interactive, science-focused learning stations which students could visit to explore a variety of topics. DeKalb County Farm Bureau provided two of the stations, one focusing on corn, and the other on soil.

Rhodora Collins challenges Sycamore Middle School students to match parts of a corn kernel with their use in everyday products.

The corn station featured two brand-new educational tools thanks to a grant from Compeer Financial’s Sycamore branch. “We wanted a way to teach about an important crop while also increasing understanding of farmers,” said Ag Literacy Coordinator Rhodora Collins. “The giant interactive kernel and panel display both help us do that.”

The Kernels of Knowledge display, oversized kernel, and related educational handouts, also made possible by the Compeer grant, will be utilized for school and community events.

The six-foot “Kernels of Knowledge” display consists of six panels conveying facts about farmers and corn production.
